Senate Vice-President Eduardo Gomes defends dialog and the role of Congress during the Economic Freedom Symposium in Brasilia
The event focused on formulating public policies that promote an environment favorable to economic growth in the country
The vice-president of the Federal Senate and president of PL Tocantins, Eduardo Gomes, was one of the highlights of the third edition of the Economic Freedom Symposium, held on Wednesday morning in Brasília (DF). Bringing together authorities from the public and private sectors, the event focused on formulating public policies that promote an environment favorable to economic growth in the country.
The symposium was attended by political leaders and representatives of various institutions, such as the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta; the president of the Central Bank, Gabriel Galípolo; and ministers Celso Sabino (Tourism), Frederico Siqueira Filho (Communications) and Silvio Costa Filho (Ports and Airports). The opening panel was mediated by the president of the Brazilian Association of Institutional and Government Relations (Abrig), Jean Castro, and journalist Daniel Rittner.
Taking part in the panel “Credit and digital payments: foundations for economic growth and financial inclusion”, Senator Eduardo Gomes shared the table with Senator Efraim Filho; the president of Febraban, Rubens Sardenberg; professors Felipe de Paula (FGV-SP) and Cláudio Lucinda (USP); Gustavo Blasco, from the GCB Group; and Elias Sfeir, president of ANBC.
During his speech, Eduardo Gomes stressed the need for greater predictability and institutional dialog in decisions that impact the national economy. “It is not possible for us to continue to be frightened when we receive issues of high relevance to Brazil and Brazilians in Parliament without prior discussion, as was the case with the IOF. In fact, the IOF sounds like the ‘off the record’, widely used in the journalistic environment, without being able to identify the source,” he criticized.
Rapporteur of Bill 2338, which deals with the regulation of Artificial Intelligence in Brazil, Eduardo Gomes also addressed the progress of the proposal, which was unanimously approved in the Senate and is currently being processed in the Chamber of Deputies. He advocated continuing the debate responsibly and with a focus on the public interest.
Praise and recognition for Gomes
Senator Efraim Filho praised the work of Eduardo Gomes as rapporteur for Bill 2338, highlighting Brazil's leading role in the international discussion on artificial intelligence.
At the end of the panel, Eduardo Gomes was honored with the “Economic Freedom Award”, presented by the president of Febraban, Rubens Sardenberg, in recognition of his contribution to the development of policies that promote economic freedom and financial inclusion in Brazil.
