Credit boosts Northeast economy during June festivities, but requires caution

Para a ANBC, o crédito fortalece a economia regional, mas exige uso responsável diante dos juros altos e da projeção de desaceleração em 2025.

At this time of year, the June festivities are one of the main economic drivers in the Northeast, moving various sectors and encouraging consumption throughout the region. According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, the period is responsible for moving more than R$ 1 billion in the regional economy, with an emphasis on commerce, hotels and the service sector. This warming scenario is reinforced by the increase in credit in the region, which grew by 13.5% in 2024, surpassing the national average (11.5%) and continues to grow at significant rates.

Credit has proved to be an important ally in boosting household consumption. In 2024, states such as Piauí (16.1%), Bahia (14.7%) and Alagoas (14.3%) led this expansion, demonstrating greater access by the population and companies to lines of finance. However, faced with a projected slowdown in Brazil's GDP and local economies, the president of the National Association of Credit Bureaus (ANBC), Elias Sfeir, warns of the need for balance in the use of these resources.

“O crédito é fundamental para alavancar a economia, mas deve ser usado com planejamento, especialmente em períodos festivos. As tradições juninas movimentam milhões e sabemos que o crédito pode ser uma oportunidade de alavancar negócios ou mesmo de cobrir uma necessidade pontual dos indivíduos, desde que famílias e empresários evitem comprometer suas finanças com dívidas de longo prazo e que comprometam mais de 30% da receita”, afirma.

With a credit balance of around R$ 1 trillion in the region, financial sustainability depends on both responsible supply by institutions and consumer awareness. Data from the credit bureau sector's default map reinforces the importance of this balance, showing that access to credit must be accompanied by financial education.

“Conscious consumption during the June period is always the best choice. The recommendation is that families prioritize spending within their real needs, consider their economic possibilities, compare rates before taking out loans and avoid using revolving credit for non-essential expenses. The June festivities can be enjoyed without compromising the population's financial health,” concludes Sfeir.
